Emergency First Aid at Work - First Aider

This is one of only two courses that is approved by the Health and Safety Executive. It is suitable for and exceeds the training required by staff assisting a dental practitioner. Whilst recommendations do not suggest that a trained first aider is required for organisations employing less than 25 people it may be appropriate to have at least one member of staff trained in Emergency First Aid at Work and thus qualifies them to administer first aid to members of staff. These first aiders are then also in a position to undertake "cascade" training to other members of staff. more:: prices::

Appointed Person

As an employer the minimum recommended provision is to have an Appointed Person who takes charge of the situation in a medical emergency. We hold frequent half day courses to prepare an appointed person for their role. more::

The Need for Training

There is a public expectation that Dental Practitioners and Dental Care Professionals should be competent in managing common medical conditions.

Whilst medical emergencies are rare in general dental practice they can occur at any time and the General Dental Council states that:

  • All members of staff need to know their role in the event of medical emergency
  • Members of staff need to be trained in dealing with such an emergency

The General Dental Council requires that a dental nurse should

  • Be competent at carrying out resuscitation techniques (BSL) and (CPR)
  • Have knowledge of how to identify that a medical emergency has arisen and provide support both for the individual with the emergency and to those providing immediate management of the emergency
  • Be familiar with the principles of first aid

Our courses ensure that these requirements are met

The Resuscitation Council recommends that all members of the dental team undertake annual training to an appropriate level. Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) would be considered as a minimum. Annual CPR training.

Additionally as employers, a dental practice needs to provide first aid facilities for it's staff to comply with Health and Safety legislation.
